My thoughts, taken from the discussion, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Wasn't sure if sharing would be appropriate, as someone else from that discussion shared their comment before me.

Anyway:

The random off-topic stuff is what makes Oppositelock what it is. This place was called "Off Topic" back in the day. That stuff has always been a part of Oppo's DNA, and it always will be.

This place is busy, but it's not overcrowded, in my opinion. You can simply scroll back to find stuff, and the most popular posts show up in the sidebar and BoO/Oppositeblog.

Oppositelock should not be a place to garner individual intention. It's a place to share cool — usually automotive/other-mechanical — stuff with like minded people, and to engage in the community. Frankly, I think some people here should kindly get over themselves.

Numerous sub blogs will only cheapen the experience, in my opinion. Why? See above. In essence, it unravels out tight-knit community; our tight-knitness is our best feature.

By the way, the lead image is a watercolor by Kapitänleutenant Hellmut Rathke, captain of the German submarine U-352.

The U-352 was sunk off the coast of North Carolina in 1942; a number of the crew survived, and Rathke painted that while in prison.

It still lies off the coast to this day, and it's a popular scuba site.

Ya I saw this earlier I'm in your boat dude, why do we need off topic forums for off topic forums. The ability to change day to day is what keeps oppo interesting and unique.

I 100% agree with you, I actually had a draft post written up to bring up the same points.

Basically, most of these sub-blog proposals would make great series on oppo. By series, I mean regularly scheduled posts about the same topic, tagged and titled the same way. Start here, get a following, then branch off. Look at CarBuying and Live and Let Diecast; topics and discussion started here, interest in the topics grew and grew, and now they are their own sub-blogs.

But subblogs are so useful!

Dude, what if I make a subblog where we can discuss whether or not to make more subblogs?

It'll declutter Oppo of all those cumbersome practical discussions!

Lol, exactly. THIS is what oppo really needs.

Exactly. And CarBuying serves a different purpose entirely. It's function isn't even to be a subset of Oppo anymore. Because we don't need something like that, but the FP editors do.

I might actually do that, just to parody the whole thing.

Some subblogs can be beneficial, the splintering of the HWEP/LALD folks reduced the hot wheels traffic here considerably. The same for an atheism blog from GT, some other blogs regarding topics just for singles, role playing games, crafting, and a few others. I'm still hoping for a purely music related blog to spring up, but so far none have taken off and I don't have the time to devote to one like I did when I was young and actually worked in the industry.

But when you take a portion of an existing blog which isn't taking away from the community by being a part of it (planes for instance), and make a subblog for it, you are taking some content away from the primary community. I wish we could make a blog for people to post their theme day crap in, but I recognize that it would be very difficult to do.

My guess is that the subblog creation trend will die off. And some of them will fall out of interest and gather cobwebs. Others will take on a life of their own. We've just got to ride it out and hope we don't lose or miss anything too awesome.

That's a fair point about the trend dying off.

I can't see something like a JDM, or trainlopnik, or an [insert specific interest] sublog maintaining enough traffic to be worthwhile. Not without constantly sharing to Oppo, which would be redundant.

Do you know a way that I can recommend this more than once? Because I can't figure it out.

I could make a subblog, rewrite this on there, and then share it to Oppo.

On theme days: could you, as mods, as soon as you see a theme starting (5 posts or something), make a new post called Official [Wagon Wednesday] Thread, and make a friendly suggestion that, instead of making dozens of new posts, people keep all their photos and replies within that one post? I know it's hard to change what's become a tradition here at OPPO, but it's an idea...

1. Recommend

2. Remove recommendation

3. Repeat

People have been pushing for that for years, but for some reason it's never taken off. Sounds like a good idea to me. But the theme days seem to have died down recently.

Honestly, I'm okay with it as long as it's just occasional, and actually car-related. It's fun to see what everyone comes up with, and cool to see cars you may have never known existed or had forgotten about.

Yeah, I think the problem was that there were theme days like EVERY. DAY. for a while, there. Now it happens once a week or so, which is fine.
